Workflow management
Workflow management models and automates multi-step business processes in ADITO. A workflow divides a process into tasks and assigns each task to the responsible user or group. The workflow guides users through their part of the process, while mandatory fields help maintain consistent data.
An active workflow is called a workflow instance. Workflows can be started from the ADITO client, by a signal, or programmatically. They can also call ADITO processes through service tasks.
Intended audience and purpose
Flowable is intended for customizers, project teams, and employees who have been trained to design workflows. Modelling a workflow requires a working understanding of BPMN and of the relevant ADITO project configuration, such as contexts, data, processes, and permissions.
The Flowable documentation provides product documentation for modelers, developers, and administrators. The Process Editor guide explains BPMN process modelling and the editor interface in detail.
The purpose is to implement and adjust defined project processes efficiently with a graphical model. It enables project teams to adapt process orchestration without implementing that orchestration in JDito. Business requirements and the required technical integration should therefore be clarified before the workflow is modelled.
Service tasks call ADITO processes through REST web services. When a workflow requires project-specific operations, the corresponding web services must be available in the project and configured for use by the workflow.
Documentation structure
Start with the client documentation to create, administer, and start workflow definitions. Use the technical reference when you model a workflow, configure Flowable Service, or work with variables and expressions. The tutorials provide end-to-end examples.
| Documentation | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Workflow definitions in the client | Creating, opening, starting, and administering workflow definitions in ADITO. |
| Technical workflow reference | Modelling workflow elements, configuring the service, and using variables, expressions, timers, and lookup fields. |
| Workflow tutorial | Building complete example workflows step by step. |
Core concepts
- A workflow definition is the reusable model of a business process.
- A workflow instance is one active execution of a workflow definition.
- A service task calls an ADITO process with the
workflowvariant. - A signal starts a workflow in response to a configured ADITO event.
